Welcome to the Department of
PUBLIC WORKS!

MISSION STATEMENT:

To advance the quality of life for the citizens of Howard County through the improvement and management of Public Works Facilities. To provide for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of Public Works facilities in accordance with the General Plan, local, state and federal regulation.

Director's Office
Employees coordinate the daily administrative functions, customer service, the capital improvement program and real estate services such as developers' agreements and Metropolitan District incorporations.

Bureau of Engineering
Employees design the county's capital projects, implement state and federal traffic control regulations, and ensure that public works projects are constructed according to standards and specifications.

Bureau of Environmental Services
Employees operate the county landfill, implement and manage recycling programs, oversee residential trash collections, and administer storm water management.

Bureau of Facilities
Employees maintain all county-owned buildings and supporting generators from routine repairs to complex renovations. Facilities’ engineering staff design and follow through on capital projects till completion.

Bureau of Highways
Employees maintain county-owned roadways, bridges and drainage facilities. They repair potholes, remove snow, unclog pipes, plant trees, mow rights of way, erect guardrails, replace curbs, fix traffic signals, and install street name signs.

Bureau of Utilities
Employees provide clean drinking water, sanitary sewer service and fire hydrants for homes and businesses within the Metropolitan District, provide sewage treatment, and implement programs for water quality and resource conservation.
