Signing and Marking Division

The Signing and Marking Division is responsible for the maintenance of all existing signing and pavement markings on our roadways. We operate out of the Cooksville Shop with a satellite sign fabrication shop located in the Howard Dorsey Building.

Howard County now uses high intensity sheeting for all our new highway signs for better visibility and longer life. Street name signs are also being upgraded with the high intensity sheeting and a new style - rectangular blade with larger sized letters for better readability. Wooden signposts are being replaced with square metal posts to avoid the warping so common in wood.

Howard County has over 6 million feet of yellow centerline, white edge line and white skip lines. These long lines are refreshed annually with latex paint and glass beads using both contractors and our in-house crew. Cross walks, stop bars and similar markings are installed by our crews as required and as our schedule permits. These markings are put in with latex paint or, where roadway conditions permit, thermoplastic for enhanced visibility and longer life.
