Diabetes Coalition

The Howard County Diabetes Coalition is concerned about health problems associated with diabetes and its threat to the people of Howard County. About 6,000 people in Howard County are diagnosed with diabetes. However, probably another 2,000 people already have the symptoms of the disease but do not realize that they have diabetes. Untreated, diabetes can lead to serious complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and the need for amputation.

For this and other reasons, a group of individuals from government agencies, local businesses and concerned citizens have come together toward achieving the goals and objectives of the Diabetes Module from the Howard County Health Improvement Plan for the Year 2010.

The goals of the Diabetes Coalition include the following:

  • Increase the number of people in Howard County who are aware of the seriousness of diabetes including the risk factors and the signs and symptoms.
  • Prevent diabetes in those people who are at risk for developing the disease.
  • Prevent the complications that can occur with diabetes.
  • Improve the overall quality of life for people with diabetes in Howard County.
  • Awareness about the seriousness of diabetes.
The Coalition members have been present at several outreach events, including:

  • Howard County Health Fair (Fairgrounds)
  • 50+ Health Expo (Wilde Lake High School)
  • Hosting Open Houses at Supreme Fitness Club and Columbia Gym
  • Participating in outreach events allows the coalition to educate people more about diabetes and talk with members of the coalition. To learn more about diabetes, including what it is, complications, and nutrition & exercise information, visit the American Diabetes Association website, www.diabetes.org. Information and activities are also available for children with diabetes on the listed website.

Prevention and Detection of those at risk for Diabetes.
Using a paper and pencil test from the American Diabetes Association, the Coalition members have screened citizens of Howard County for diabetes risk. Those who have been screened and want to learn more about diabetes are sent updates and information about diabetes throughout the year. To learn if you are at risk, click here (www.diabetes.org) to take the risk test.

The Diabetes Coalition is a place for networking, information sharing and planning of events to assist in diabetes prevention and education in Howard County. Please come and share your special talents and help us make more people aware about diabetes and its complications.
