CANCER CONTROL PROGRAMS The goals of the Cancer Control Program at the Howard County Health Department are to reduce cancer mortality in Howard County and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes among whites and ethnic minorities. Through the Cigarette Restitution Fund (CRF), Cancer Control will target seven cancers in the county with prevention, education, screening, and/or treatment programs. The seven targeted cancers are lung, colorectal, breast, cervical, prostate, skin, and oral cancers. Several programs are currently in place. The Colorectal Cancer Program (CRCP) provides free colonoscopies to those residents who qualify. Diagnosis and treatment services are available if needed. Colorectal cancer education is provided throughout the county. The Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP), which is funded through separate grants from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), provides clinical breast exams, mammograms, and pap tests for women who qualify. Diagnosis and treatment services are also funded if needed. For more information about the Cancer Control Programs, contact us at: Howard County Health Department The Oral Cancer Prevention Program, which is funded through the Office of Oral Health at DHMH, currently provides oral cancer screenings to persons enrolled in the tobacco cessation classes.
