Pooch's Pool Party This unique canine-only swim will wrap up the "Dog Daze" of summer. Pooches and their pals (the human kind) are invited to paddle and play before the pool is closed for the season. Please be aware that all dog park/off-leash are rules apply to this event and must be followed, and all dog handlers must be at least 18 years of age. Children under the age of 12 are NOT permitted. Youth 12-17 years of age must be accompanied by a registered adult. Splace is limited and advance registration is required for this popular event. $10 for 1.5 hours; fee includes admission of one dog accompanied by a maximum of two handlers. Night Crawlers Fishing Tournament Boat or shoreline anglers can fish for prizes in this catch-and-release event. Youth win trophies and are entered in a random prize drawing. Adults win cash prizes and trophies. Categories include bass, bluegill, crappie, trout and catfish. Fishing license is required for age 16-up; license, bait and tackle are available for purchase in the General Store at the concession dock. Harvest Harrier 5K Trail Race Beginning and experienced runners are invited to participate in this unique 5K cross-country race. Awards go to the top male and female runners and to the top three runners in each division. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m.; race t-shirts are guaranteed to pre-registered runners. The Great Snipe Hunt Join the Department of Recreation & Parks as they gather around the campfire, feast on s'mores and make a craft while preparing for the Great Snipe Hunt. Take a wagon ride and hear a story about the infamous, hard to catch, "Howard County Snipe," the largest of the snipe species. Then venture into the woods in search of this elusive creature. Bring a large brown paper bag and flashlight for this catch-and-release event. No on-site registration, advance registration is required by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8. Celebration of Sports Join the Department of Recreation & Parks, along with other organizations and businesses with vested interest in community sports in Howard County for a Celebration of Sports. Sunday in the Park Join the Department of Recreation & Parks for a not so scary Halloween event for the entire family. This "best bargain in seasonal entertainment" includes treats for little tricksters, buried "treasures," pumpkin decorating, pony rides, crafts, games, prizes, musical and roving entertainers, face painting and more. Visit the cave-maze, take a cakewalk, play family games and laugh along with a puppet show. Enjoy games, music and merriment while feasting on seasonal delights available at the festival. Children can dress in their favorite costumer and set out safely on the Trick or Treat Trail (must be accompained by an adult). Pay on site or purchase advance admission; on-line registration requires an approved online account. Holiday Mart Join the Department of Recreation & Parks for the 36th year of this annual craft event that features unique and unusual juried works presented by 130 craftspersons. "Children on Board" Preschool and Child Care Information Fair “Children On Board” will provide parents, guardians, grandparents and child care personnel with a “one stop shop.” Information on child care and pre-school programs will be available for parents, along with personal contact with teachers and program directors. Representatives from community service organizations that provide programs and services to Howard County’s young children will be on hand to furnish information to parents. The new 2009 Early Childhood Education Guide will be distributed free to all participants. Admission is free. "Come Home to Howard County" Housing Fair The Housing Fair targets individuals and families who currently live in the county or those who live outside the county and are looking for more information on the diverse and affordable home ownership and rental opportunities available in Howard County.
