Nomination form available on-line and at Library branches

County Seeks Nominations for “Community Sports Hall of Fame”

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – County Executive Ken Ulman has announced that nomination forms are now available for Howard County’s 2008 “Community Sports Hall of Fame,” sponsored by the county’s Department of Recreation & Parks. The Community Sports Hall of Fame honors outstanding individuals who have gained prominence or made substantial contributions in community recreational sports in Howard County. Deadline for nominations is March 17, 2008.

"The Department of Recreation & Parks established the ‘Community Sports Hall of Fame’ three years ago to recognize and pay tribute to individuals who have played a significant role in community recreational sports in Howard County, either as an athlete, coach, manager, official or even as a behind-the-scenes contributor,” said County Executive Ulman. “I look forward to welcoming the 2008 class of inductees at the annual Celebration of Sports this fall.”

In addition to being closely identified with community recreation sports, nominees must have been residents of Howard County during their period of contribution or devoted their community sports efforts primarily in Howard County.

Nomination forms are available on line at www.howardcountymd.gov/RAP, at all local Howard County Library branches or by calling Recreation & Parks at (410) 313-4711. All nominations must be postmarked by the March 17 deadline and mailed or delivered to Recreation & Parks Community Sports Hall of Fame, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia, MD 21046-1677.

Current Hall of Fame inductees include: Felix Rausch, Bill Sim, David Tripp, Tony Aardrup, Arleen Dinneen, Bill Glasgow, George and Joyce Bickerton, Betty and Bill Straehle, Russ Flowers, Peter Finck, Woody and Carol Hearn, Bob Baker, Adelaine Stocks, Rob Vigorito, P.J. Kesmodel, Marie Curry, Paul Donovan, James McCauley, Bill McCormack, Jr., Joseph Wall and Jim Yedlicka, Jr.

“Both the ‘Community Sports Hall of Fame’ and the Department’s ‘Celebration of Sports’ are important components in our County’s endeavor to promote the national GoodSports program championed by the National Recreation and Parks Association,” said Gary Arthur, Director of Howard County’s Department of Recreation & Parks.

The Howard County “Community Sports Hall of Fame” is open to the public Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the Department of Recreation & Parks Headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.
