County Executive Ulman Appoints New Office on Aging Administrator

ELLICOTT CITY, MD -- County Executive Ken Ulman is pleased to announce that Susan Vaeth has been hired as the new Administrator for the County’s Office on Aging. Ms. Vaeth will assume the position on April 28, 2008 and replaces Phyllis Madachy who became Howard County Government’s Deputy Chief Administrator Officer in November 2007.

Ms. Vaeth has worked for the State of Maryland for the past seventeen years and has extensive experience in aging and disabilities issues. Since 2003, she has been the Chief of Client and Community Services for the Maryland Department of Aging. In this role, she has chaired the Governor’s Conference on Vital Aging and oversees many statewide aging programs including: Senior Information and Assistance, Caregiver Support, Guardianship, Senior Center Operations and Evidence Based Practices. Prior to her work in Aging, Ms. Vaeth worked for the Developmental Disabilities Administration, the Baltimore City Health Department and the ARC of Baltimore.

“The experience that Susan brings to Howard County from a statewide perspective will greatly enhance the Office on Aging’s ability to meet the current and future needs of Howard County’s growing aging population,” said County Executive Ken Ulman

“I am looking forward to my new role,” said Ms. Vaeth. “The focus of my career has been in service to others, and this opportunity allows me to continue on the path to provide progressive, consumer-oriented services to Howard County’s seniors and their family members.”

Vaeth holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University and a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University. She also earned a Certificate of Advanced Study in Education, Technologies for Handicapped and a Certificate on Aging from the Johns Hopkins University Odyssey Program.

Susan Rosenbaum, Director of the Department of Citizen Services, under which the Office on Aging is located, said, “I am thrilled to have someone of Sue’s caliber take on this critical leadership role.”
