Human Rights Commission Seeks Nominees for 2009 Human Rights Award

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – The Human Rights Commission is seeking nominations for its 2009 Human Rights Award which recognizes outstanding achievement in eliminating discrimination and advancing the human rights for Howard County citizens. This year’s awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 10, at Slayton House in Wilde Lake, 10451 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia. The event also marks the 40th anniversary of the Commission.

To be eligible for this award, nominees may be living or deceased, must have lived in Howard County for at least 10 years, have displayed leadership and achievement within Howard County’s human rights movement, and their efforts must have had a lasting impact.

To apply, nominators must submit a typed narrative, not to exceed two pages in length, that documents the nominee’s achievements, accomplishments and contributions to human and civil rights in Howard County. The narrative must include information about the nominee’s human and civil rights endeavors.

Nomination forms can be obtained by visiting the Office of Human Rights webpage at www.howardcountymd.gov/HR/HR_HomePage.htm or by calling the Office at 410-313-6430. All completed nomination forms should be mailed to the Human Rights Commission, Attn: HRC Awards Committee, at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Suite 239, Columbia, MD 21046, or faxed to 410-313-6468. Current staff members of the Office of Human Rights are not eligible for consideration and all selection decisions are final. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 25.

Past recipients of the Human Rights Commission’s Award include: Dr. Sydney Cousin and Leola Dorsey (2008) and Colette Roberts and Rev. Dr. Robert Turner (2007).
