Police Officer of the Month August 2003 Police Officer Corey Jefferson has been selected as the Howard County Police Officer for the month of August. In one significant case, Officer Jefferson responded to the Rite-Aid store on Route 40 for a report of a shooting at that location. Upon arrival, Officer Jefferson and other officers entered the store and found a suspect lying on the floor. Officer Jefferson assisted in the initial contact with and arrest of the suspect. She identified witnesses and secured evidence at the crime scene. Officer Jefferson transported the suspect to Southern District for booking after CIB responded to the scene. In another case, Officer Jefferson stopped a vehicle on Main Street in Ellicott City for an equipment violation. She ran the vehicle and the driver in the NCIC computer. The computer check found the driver to be wanted on an open warrant. Officer Jefferson placed the driver in custody and searched his vehicle incident to the arrest. The search revealed a glass smoking device with CDS residue. A search of the trunk revealed a book bag containing two sandwich bags with probable marijuana, a large clear bag containing sixteen sandwich bags with probable marijuana, a pocket scale and a box of sandwich bags. A search of the driver found more than $1,100 in cash. Officer Jefferson arrested the driver and charged him with violations including possession with intent to distribute CDS. She seized the cash and the vehicle for forfeiture. On the same day, Officer Jefferson responded to Main Street near Maryland Avenue for a report of a hit and run accident. A driver had struck a vehicle and abandoned the car at that location. Officer Jefferson gathered initial information from a witness and began checking the area. She located the suspected driver walking on Main Street near the Baltimore County line. Officer Jefferson’s contact with the driver indicated that she was possibly under the influence of alcohol. The suspect driver was administered field sobriety tests and failed. The driver was arrested and consented to a chemical test with a result of .14 BAC. The driver was charged with DWI and related violations. In late August, Officer Jefferson responded to the scene of a hit and run accident on a parking lot in Ellicott City. The suspect vehicle had reportedly struck two parked cars and then left the location. The suspect vehicle was a company work van and he driver was reported to be possibly intoxicated. Officer Jefferson was able to locate the driver after contacting representatives from the company and inquiring about the driver’s identity. She then responded to Columbia where she contacted the suspect driver and arrested him. Officer Jefferson’s supervisors describe her as a very consistent and productive officer. She has an excellent attitude, is supportive of the department and supervision and is well respected by her fellow officers. Congratulations to Officer Jefferson on this well-deserved recognition. |
