Police Officer of the Month

April 2006

PFC Tom Rukamp was Chief Livesay’s final selection as officer of the month, winning the award for April. Throughout the month, PFC Rukamp showed his dedication to the goals of our agency by addressing traffic safety, sharing information and reducing the risk of violent crime.

In 13 days of service Rukamp handled over 40 calls for service in the western end of the county and created two insight reports during self-initiated activity. In an area that consists of many rural roads where reckless driving can have a devastating affect, Rukamp issued 118 citations-, averaging 9 citations every 12 hours. Of these citations, 100 of them were for failing to wear a seat belt; a life saving effort that is a perennial priority for our agency and especially important during the Chief Challenge campaign. Additionally, Rukamp made 2 arrests for DUI making him a formidable, positive presence in our county’s west end.

On two occasions in April, PFC Rukamp volunteered to present in-service training for the Critical Incident Stress Management class, serving as a constructive peer model for fellow officers. Similarly, Rukamp served as a Field Training Officer for two recruits, mentoring them in proactive patrol techniques. One incident from a traffic stop led to a handgun seizure and arrest, thwarting a potentially grave situation.

Finally, PFC Rukamp exchanged information with area troopers in an attempt to coordinate an arrest for on-going commercial thefts in his area. His efforts represent excellent cooperation and information sharing, seeking to solve the crime above obtaining personal affirmation. Congratulations to PFC Tom Rukamp for an outstanding performance this month!
