Police Officer Recruit

The Police Officer Recruit is a trainee assigned to the Education and Training Division for classroom instruction and Field Training for a period of forty weeks. After successfully completing the Police Academy, the Probationary Police Officer will obtain sworn status as a Probationary Police Officer and fulfill the eighteen month probation period. The Probationary Police Officer is eligible for two salary increases during this period.

The responsibilities of a Police Officer include:

  • patrolling a designated area to preserve peace and prevent the commission of crime
  • enforcing the motor vehicle laws
  • enforcing parking regulations
  • directing traffic
  • conducting preliminary criminal investigations
  • administering first aid
  • gathering evidence
  • obtaining witness statements
  • making community liaison contacts
  • effecting arrests
  • testifying in court

Qualifications

To be considered for employment as a police officer you MUST meet the following standards:

Must be a U.S. Citizen, at least 21 years of age by the swearing-in ceremony, 60 college credits or A.A. degree (no college credits are required at the time of application through our Associate's Degree Program OR 2 years active duty military or cadet time in lieu of 60 credits), Possess a valid driver's license at time of hire, a clear police record and background as determined by a comprehensive polygraph and background investigation.
