Appointment Process

The County Executive (410-313-2013) recommends appointees for most boards and commissions; the County Council confirms members. The Council directly makes some appointments, such as for the Board of Appeals and the Compensation Commission.

Council as Members

The County Council (410-313-2001) members compose the Board of License Commissioners and the Zoning Board.

How to Volunteer

To volunteer your service on one of the boards or commissions which advise county officials, write to the County Executive's office at 3430 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City, MD 21043. A resume may be required.

Board of Supervisors of Elections

Three members and two substitutes serve two-year terms to set policy. Meetings are the fourth Monday. Contact Elections (410-313-5820) for details.

Howard Community College Board of Trustees

Seven members serve six-year terms. The Board meets monthly, September through May, to set policy. Call Howard Community College (410-772-4913) for more information.

Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board

Three members hear appeals that go beyond the supervisor's level. A decision is mailed to an appellant who has 30 days from the date of notice to then appeal to the Maryland Tax Court. Call Assessments and Taxation (410-480-7980) for details.

Extension Advisory Council

Nine members serving three-year terms give advice on program needs. Meetings are four times each year. Call Cooperative Extension (410-313-2707).

Friends of the Florence Bain Senior Center

Twelve representatives of center groups meet monthly to plan program ways and means. Call the Senior Center (410-313-7213).

Howard Community College Alumni and Friends Association

HCC graduates, former students and friends of the college can maintain a meaningful affiliation with the college and work to support the college. Membership benefits are offered. Call HCC (410-772-4450) for details.

Juvenile Aid Volunteer Auxiliary

Nine to 12 members help with fund raising and support projects, programs and activities. Call Juvenile Justice (410-480-7878).

Mid-Maryland Private Industry Council

Members are appointed by the Howard County Executive and the commissioners in Carroll County to oversee services and programs. Call the Employment and Training Center (410-313-4600).

Pets on Wheels Advisory Board

Twelve members selected by the chairman and coordinator determine the direction and policy of the program. Meetings are quarterly; terms are three years. Call Pets on Wheels (410-313-7461).

Senior Center Council

Eleven members of this advisory group elected by Florence Bain Senior Center participants serve two-year terms and meet the first Monday of each month. Call the Senior Center (410-313-7213).
