TRANSPORTATION & ROADS Getting there is part of the fun! Your travels in and through Howard County can be successful with up-to-date information about commuting, roads, parking and traffic. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Car and Van Pooling Commuter Solutions (410-313-3130) provides free car and van pool matching services to individuals traveling within Howard County or to Washington, Baltimore and surrounding areas. Howard Transit For route and schedule information, call 1-800-270-9553. HOWARD TRANSIT SCHEDULED BUS SERVICE Buses operate daily along fixed routes throughout eastern Howard County. Service areas include Columbia, Ellicott City, North Laurel, Savage, Clarksville and others. Service is also available between Columbia and BWI Airport seven days per week. HT RIDE HT Ride (1-800-270-9553) provides specialized transportation to senior citizens and individuals with disabilities throughout Howard County. Service is also available to individuals who cannot access bus routes due to disabilities. Certification is required prior to using the services. Fixing the Roads Citizens can request road improvements through the Bureau of Highways (410-313-7450). Employees repair pot holes, maintain guardrails and bridges, resolve drainage problems, replace sidewalks, curbs and ramps, and resurface. Snow Removal The Bureau of Highways (410-313-7450) removes snow from county roads. In order to quickly mobilize as much traffic as possible, workers first service primary and secondary roads. Side streets are cleared after major arteries and collectors. Snow Removal on Undedicated Roads For a listing of contractors who will remove snow from undedicated roads, call the Public Works Administrative Bureau (410-313-2330). Traffic Forecasts The Department of Planning and Zoning (410-313-2357) provides long-range traffic forecasts for the county through use of the MINUTP computer model and traffic counts by State Highway Administration (SHA) and Public Works traffic engineers. Analysts annually review the Maryland Department of Transportation consolidated transportation program, and study SHA plans and programs for consistency with the General Plan. Abandoned Vehicles To ask the police to investigate an abandoned vehicle on a public right-of-way, call the Police Department (410-313-2200). You may request a disposal certificate by mail for removal of a vehicle abandoned on private property. Scenic Roads Legislation adopted in 1994 ensures that on 60 designated roads or road segments, significant features and scenic views are protected when new development occurs or road improvements are made. The Department of Planning and Zoning (410-313-2350) has details. Street Lights Residents may petition for street lights through the Department of Public Works (410-313-2430). Provisions of Howard County design manuals must be met before lights are accepted into the county system. BGE (410-685-0123) responds to repair requests. Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Personnel in the bureaus of Engineering (410-313-2430) and Highways (410-313-7450) work with police to investigate complaints involving traffic and pedestrian safety. Highways (410-313-7450) workers install and maintain traffic signals and street signs. |
