A Howard County construction project to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians accessing Burleigh Manor Middle School and Centennial High School in Ellicott City is underway. Lane shifts along Old Annapolis Road can be expected during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening, Howard County Recreation & Parks held a Lacrosse Sendoff exhibition game at Troy Park in recognition of players who graduated from local high schools this year. The event gave young lacrosse players a chance to play one last game with their teammates.

County Executive Calvin Ball launched a new food distribution map for Howard County residents seeking food pantries or access to free meals. The innovative map currently lists 31 locations offering groceries, produce, non-perishables, fresh and frozen meals for students, residents, and older adults in need.

Howard County is joining a New York lawsuit against President Trump and his Administration for their July 21, 2020 census policy attempting to “exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status.”

Howard County has activated Emergency Operations in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaias, which is expected to cause heavy rainfall and winds between 20-30 miles an hour. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the county from Monday at 11 p.m. through Tuesday at 11 p.m. 

Howard County is joining an amicus brief, filed by the State of New York, in support of the CASA complaint against the Trump Administration’s rule to delay applicants for asylum from getting authorization to work while their application is processed. 

County Executive Calvin Ball made the following statement regarding approaching Tropical Storm Isaias: “Our Emergency Management team is closely monitoring the approach of Tropical Storm Isaias, which is expected to cause heavy rainfall and sustained winds at 20-30 miles an hour. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the county from Monday at 11 p.m. through Tuesday at 11 p.m." 

A Howard County road maintenance project to extend the lifespan of some of the County’s roads by seven to ten years is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, August 3.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball highlighted rental and eviction rights for tenants ahead of August 1st. “This Saturday, many residents will face another month of missed rent due to income loss from COVID-19,” said Ball. “It’s critical that tenants are aware of their rights. Under the current Executive Order issued by Governor Hogan, a court cannot order the eviction of any tenant who can show that their failure to pay rent was a result of COVID-19. While we’ve allocated $1.5 million towards rental and eviction relief, and promoted other relief programs, we know that this crisis is far from over.” 

Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services has received $821,257 in federal funding, secured by Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, and Congressmen John Sarbanes and Kweisi Mfume. The funding was awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters – COVID-19 Supplemental (AFG-S) program, which provides funds for the purchase of PPE and related supplies for our nation’s first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The Department of Community Resources and Services (DCRS) is continuing efforts to house individuals and families facing homelessness, especially those who meet the CDC definition of vulnerable or at high-risk for severe health outcomes or fatality if they contract the COVID-19 virus.

The County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, August 11 to present plans for a stream stabilization project between 6733 and 6737 Pirch Way in Elkridge. The purpose of the project is to stabilize the stream channel and banks and to provide water quality improvements to areas downstream.

Approximately 40 public sanitary sewer-house connections along Stonebrook Lane and Blue Sea Drive in Columbia will be relined using cured-in-place pipe lining to extend each connection’s service life. During this project, there may be times when households are asked limit or reduce the amount of water discharged to the County’s sewer main.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball today announced the launch of a 30-day comment period on the draft Ellicott City Watershed Master Plan. This comprehensive, long-range document creates a community-driven vision for historic Ellicott City and the surrounding Tiber Branch Watershed. The master plan establishes goals, desired outcomes and policies for the next 20 years. It also features conceptual illustrations that can serve as inspiration should specific opportunities arise over time.

Epidemiologists are seeing an increase in the number of positive cases among those 35 years of age and younger, with recent data from the week of June 21 to the week of July 5 showing a case count increase of 111 percent.

The County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual public meeting on Tuesday, August 4 to present plans for a stream restoration project along Rogers Avenue in an effort to reduce stream bed and bank erosion and to protect the surrounding infrastructure.

A Howard County construction project to improve a storm drain system near 3605-3621 Valley Road in Ellicott City. For approximately six weeks during the project, the northbound lane of Valley Road at the project site will be closed during work hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., eather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late November.
