Walktober 2025
Join the Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC) and local partners for a month of walk and move events called Howard County Walktober. Walking is Maryland's official exercise, so let's get moving! Find more information about the LHIC here.
If you plan to host a walk event and would like to add it to the Howard County Walktober Calendar Events page, please fill out the HoCo Walktober 2025 Interest Form. Click here to request print copies of Walktober Flyers.
Please note that the LHIC will not be hosting these events, but is promoting partner walk/move events to the community. If you are interested in collaborating with the organizers of one or more of the events on HoCo’s Walktober page, please reach out to the organizers directly.

Rise and Stride at Schooley Mill Park with Dr. Lisa Massie, owner of Evolving with Motion Physical Therapy and Coaching. This flat outdoor asphalt loop is about 1/2 mile long with a lot of benches along the route. Step into the fun and active world of Adult Beyond Words, an inclusive monthly class designed to spark joy and ignite the imagination of people (ages 18+) with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. Participants may partake in five engaging stations, that include:
- Motor Skills - with activities that celebrate fine motor movement and coordination
- Arts & Crafts - where imagination and artistic vision come to life, giving voice to the unique expressions within
- Cognitive Skills - with puzzles and cognitive challenges that nurture intellectual growth and problem-solving skills
- Movement - with active games, physical challenges, and other movement exploration that focuses on gross motor skills, balance, etc.to get participants up and moving
- Sensory - where calm, relaxation, and play combine to stimulate and regulate the senses to reduce anxiety and stress
With a new theme and different stations each month, Adult Beyond Words is not just a class; it's an invitation to celebrate the joy of discovery and the magic of shared experiences while creating personal connection and growth. Participants may stay for as little or as long as they want. Caregivers must stay with participants at all times. Part of the joy of nature is the serendipity – you never know what you might encounter. Join our volunteer naturalists for a guided hike through the Conservancy’s grounds to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and discover the natural wonders that await. The route goes to Lake Elkhorn, up the Oakland Mills Road protected bicycle lane, through Blandair Park, down to and across the bridge over Route 29, around Lake Kittamaqundi and return, which includes an alternate route on paths through the woods. Step into the fun and active world of Adult Beyond Words, an inclusive monthly class designed to spark joy and ignite the imagination of people (ages 18+) with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. Participants may partake in five engaging stations, that include:
- Motor Skills - with activities that celebrate fine motor movement and coordination
- Arts & Crafts - where imagination and artistic vision come to life, giving voice to the unique expressions within
- Cognitive Skills - with puzzles and cognitive challenges that nurture intellectual growth and problem-solving skills
- Movement - with active games, physical challenges, and other movement exploration that focuses on gross motor skills, balance, etc.to get participants up and moving
- Sensory - where calm, relaxation, and play combine to stimulate and regulate the senses to reduce anxiety and stress
With a new theme and different stations each month, Adult Beyond Words is not just a class; it's an invitation to celebrate the joy of discovery and the magic of shared experiences while creating personal connection and growth. Participants may stay for as little or as long as they want. Caregivers must stay with participants at all times. This short ride features moderate hills through scenic western HoCo farm country. We hit peak altitude at mile 5 then enjoy an almost 8-mile (mostly) downhill stretch on Florence Rd. Still some hills after that, but none of them too, too bad. We'll regroup a couple of times so that the ride leader can catch up with the "kids." 21.4 miles with an average ride speed of 13-15 mph. Ride to Woodlawn Plantation House & Slave Quarters, starting at Historic Oakland Manor 5430 Vantage Point Rd, Around Lake Kitt, across RT 29 pedestrian bridge, long hill to Steven’s Forest Rd, to Blandair Park on paths thru Thunderhill, some steep short hill on this part of ride, cross Rt 108 from Mellon Brook to Bendix Rd, to courthouse and then onto pathway to what had been Woodlawn Plantation Slave quarters. Also ride to the Woodlawn Plantation house and then reverse the route back to start. 12.6 miles with 705 ft elevation gain and an average ride speed of 8-10 mph. Start at Historic Oakland Manor, around Wilde Lake. Ride is mostly on paths, but there is a long up hill from Wilde Lake to Harpers Choice. Ride continues into Swansfield and then a lovely ride into the Middle Patuxent River Valley, where there are some steep down and up hills. Then ride to Cedar Lane Park, with a short ride on Rt 108 on a wide shoulder to Eliots Oak Rd, continuing back onto a nice downhill on paths thru Longfellow and back around Wilde Lake to the start. 10 miles with 625 ft elevation gain and average ride speed of 8-10 mph.
